Squint Surgery

A squint, or strabismus, is a condition where both eyes don’t point in the same direction. It’s more common in young children, but can occur at any age. With strabismus, one eye may turn inward, outward, upward or downward while the other eye looks straight ahead. This can happen all the time or it may come and go.

Squint surgery is done in order to fix your eyes’ alignment by adjusting the muscles around the eye. One or both eyes may be operated on, and depending on the severity of your squint, one, two, or more of the six muscles may be adjusted.

1
Indications for Squint Surgery

There are many reasons why someone might need surgery to correct strabismus. Examples include diplopia (double vision), reduced binocularity, an abnormal head position due to ocular misalignment or nystagmus, and a constricted visual field due to strabismus.

2
Squint Surgery

Squint surgery is usually done under general anaesthesia when the patient is asleep. The surgery usually takes less than an hour. Patients (or their parents, in the case of children) can usually go home the same day.

If your child is having surgery, you'll be able to accompany them into the operating room and stay with them until they've been given the anaesthetic.
