Biometry (IOL Calculation)

Biometry is the method of applying mathematics to biology. The primary thing that determines the refractive power of the eye is a combination of the cornea, lens, ocular media, and axial length of the eye. If we know these things, we can then calculate the power of the intraocular lens (IOL) implant that will be needed for cataract surgery in order to achieve the desired post-operative refraction.

01
Preparation for Biometry (IOL Calculation)

It is recommended that patients stop using contact lenses 24 to 48 hours before their IOL Master ocular biometry test, as the test cannot be accurately performed with them in. However, no prior preparation or pupillary dilation is necessary for the test.

02
What conditions can Biometry (IOL Calculation) help diagnose?

The ocular biometry test is important because it helps measure the size of the eyeball (called axial length) and allows us to calculate the dioptric power of intraocular lenses. These lenses are implanted at the end of the crystalline lens, which is the inner lens of the eye that helps with vision. This test is crucial for those who have had crystalline lens implants so that we can make sure the lenses are working correctly and providing the best vision possible.

Why Choose us

It is important to do your research when looking for a proper set up to perform a Biometry test. Choose a diagnostic ophthalmology set up with a knowledgeable and caring technical staff in order to find the best possible result and report for the eye test advised to you.
Acuity Eye Center is known for using state-of-the-art software and providing high-quality care for patients needing Biometry examinations. The clinic makes every patient feel like part of the EyeAcuity family from the moment they walk through the doors.
As a physician, Dr Zia ul Mazhry at Acuity Eye Center is a specialist in interpreting and reporting Biometry tests with more than 3 decades of experience in the field of Ophthalmology. He has got his post-graduation from the Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh Glasgow and the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Pakistan. An evidence-based approach is used right from testing, interpretation, and reporting of the tests performed. Generally speaking, Dr Zia ul Mazhry and his staff are dedicated to providing affordable, high-quality eye care to their patients across the board.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is Biometry (IOL Calculation)?
Biometry is the process of measuring the corneal power and length of the eye. If either of these measurements are inaccurate, it will lead to an unpredicted postoperative refractive error.
How long does a Biometry test take?
Optical biometry is a technique for measuring the size and shape of the eye. This is done by shining light into the eye and measuring how the light is reflected back. A special camera is used to take measurements, which are then entered into a computer. The results of the test can provide information about the distance between different structures inside the eye. The whole test usually takes between 10 and 15 minutes.
What is a biometry pre-assessment?
This pre-operative measurement is used to calculate the correct power for artificial intra-ocular lenses that will be implanted into your eye once your cataract is removed. We measure the length of the eyeball (known as the axial length) and corneal power to apply very sensitive formulas for biometry calculations.
Is dilation required for Biometry?
Pupil dilation is important for a more thorough clinical examination and may be done before biometry. Additionally, dilating the pupil can help with AL measurement in eyes that have dense nuclear or posterior subcapsular cataracts, which can make a biometric measurement with the Lenstar or IOL Master more difficult.
How much does the Biometry (IOL Calculation) test cost?
It will cost you 8000 PKR.
