An eye exam is a series of tests to assess your vision and check for eye diseases. Your eye doctor will likely use various instruments, shine bright lights into your eyes, and ask you to look through an array of lenses. Each test during an eye exam evaluates a different aspect of your vision or eye health.
01
Why it's done
An eye exam can help detect eye problems in their earliest stage when they are the most treatable. Regular eye exams give your eye care professional a chance to help you correct or adapt to vision changes and provide tips on taking care of your eyes. An eye exam might also offer clues to your overall health.
02
During the exam
A clinical assistant or optometrist will usually take care of the initial steps of the examination, such as taking your medical history and giving you an eye test. An eye exam usually involves the following steps:
- Measuring your visual acuity to see if you need glasses or contact lenses
- Checking your eye pressure. You'll be given eyedrops to numb your eyes so that the doctor can examine the inside of your eye more easily.
- Dilating your eyes with eyedrops to make them wider.
- The individual will sit with their head resting in the slit lamp microscope, and the doctor will place a special contact lens directly onto the eyeball. The test should reveal any signs of increased eye pressure, which may indicate glaucoma. If the test does reveal increased eye pressure, then the doctor may recommend further testing or treatment.
03
After the exam
After your eye exam, you and your doctor will go over the results of all the testing. This will include a talk about your vision, your risk of developing any eye disease, and what preventive measures you can take to protect your eyesight.
