Refraction by Optometrist

A refraction is an eye examination conducted by an ophthalmologist or optometrist that gauges an individual’s eyeglass or contact lens prescription. The test consists of having the patient read a letter chart while the doctor covers and uncovers each eye in turn.

01
Why it's done

A refraction test is usually done as part of a routine eye examination in order to determine if you have a refractive error, which means you may need glasses or contact lenses. If you're over the age of 40 and have normal distance vision but are having difficulty seeing things up close, this test can be used to figure out what power reading glasses you'll need.

02
During the exam

The eye doctor will administer this test by having you sit in a chair with a special device called a phoropter or refractor attached to it. You will then look through the device and focus on an eye chart 20 feet (6 meters) away. This device contains lenses of different strengths that the eye doctor will use to test your vision one eye at a time.

03
After the exam

If your vision is normal without corrective lenses, then the refractive error is zero (Plano) and your vision should be 20/20 (6/6).

A value of 20/20 (6/6) is considered normal vision. This means you can read 3/8-inch (1 centimetre) letters at 20 feet (6 meters). A small type size is also used to determine normal near vision.
